Bihar SIR: SC asks EC to publish names of 65 lakh omitted from voter list; says Aadhaar acceptable as ID

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Election Commission to publish details of 65 lakh persons omitted from the electoral rolls after the special intensive revision in poll-bound Bihar on its official website by Tuesday.A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymala Bagchi asked that poll body to display printed copies of booth-wise list of deleted voters with reasons in panchayat and block development offices and the district-wise deletion list of voters in the chief electoral officer’s office.The apex court also said that the soft copies of deleted voter list must be searchable by Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) number.Also Read: Bengal ready for SIR, state CEO writes to poll panelMeanwhile, the top court also asked the poll body to accept Aadhaar card as an acceptable document for establishing identity.“Transparency is needed about 65 lakh deleted voters to enable people to seek clarification or correction,” the bench said.
