Why Shreyas Iyer is in ICU? Scary details of internal bleeding, body vitals and more | Cricket News
Indian vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is currently in the ICU of a Sydney hospital after suffering a frightening internal injury during the third ODI against Australia. What initially looked like a routine fielding incident quickly turned into a medical emergency when Iyer’s body vitals began to fluctuate sharply after the game.
The injury occurred when Iyer sprinted backward from point to take a brilliant catch to dismiss Alex Carey. In the process, he collided awkwardly and appeared to hurt his left rib cage. He walked off the field but soon complained of severe pain and discomfort upon returning to the dressing room. Team doctors immediately decided to rush him to the hospital. Scans revealed a laceration to his spleen, causing internal bleeding. The spleen, a delicate organ located in the abdomen, can bleed heavily if ruptured. TimesofIndia.com has learnt that, Iyer’s vitals dropped alarmingly soon after the impact, forcing the medical team to act quickly. Also Read: Shreyas Iyer’s family could fly to Sydney soon, BCCI making arrangements The BCCI confirmed in a statement that Iyer had sustained “an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region” and that scans revealed “a laceration injury to the spleen.” The statement added that he remains medically stable and is recovering well under the supervision of specialists in Sydney, with the Indian team doctor staying back to monitor him daily.
