“I cried in my car”: Kangana Ranaut recalls she was asked not to tag Masaba Gupta after wearing her saree to Ram Janmabhoomi
Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut has once again stirred a storm, this time by reopening a deeply personal episode that, according to her, left her feeling humiliated and shaken.Over the weekend, Kangana took to social media to recall an incident involving designer Masaba Gupta, alleging that she was explicitly told not to wear Masaba’s outfit for a visit to Ram Janmabhoomi. The memory, she said, still makes her feel “sick to the stomach” because of the prejudice she believes was behind it.Kangana first hinted at the episode on Instagram Stories, but as questions poured in, she decided to spell it out in detail on X. She questioned why images of her wearing Masaba’s clothes, pictures that had gone viral at the time – were never acknowledged or shared by the designer or her brand. “Designers usually jump at the chance when celebrities wear their clothes,” she wrote, adding that the silence around those images felt deliberate.Explaining the context, Kangana said this happened when her film Tejas was nearing release. She wanted to visit Ram Janmabhoomi and asked the same stylist, appointed by the production house for her promotions, to help arrange outfits for the trip. According to Kangana, that’s when things took an ugly turn.She alleged that Masaba had initially sent clothes for her promotions, but once it was made clear that the outfit would be worn for a Ram Janmabhoomi visit, the designer told the stylist not to let Kangana wear her clothes for that occasion. Kangana claimed the stylist, clearly uncomfortable, quietly told her not to tag Masaba or her brand and even revealed she had paid for the saree herself to avoid further embarrassment.
By the time Kangana found out, she said, she was already dressed and on her way from Lucknow to Ayodhya. “It was too much to process,” she wrote, calling out what she described as hate, bitterness, and prejudice. “How ugly,” she added, saying the incident still makes her feel physically ill.Reiterating her earlier Instagram post, Kangana recalled how helpless she felt in that moment. She said she had already left for Ayodhya and couldn’t change outfits, and ended up quietly crying in her car. Later, she claimed, the designer – like others in the industry, asked that neither she nor the brand be mentioned in connection with the look.Kangana also took a swipe at what she sees as selective outrage in the industry, questioning public displays of emotion and calling out what she believes are unspoken biases within elite circles.On the professional front, Kangana was last seen in Emergency, where she portrayed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
