Brook, playing on his home ground, displayed aggressive batting against all Indian bowlers, achieving his 20th fifty-plus test score in his 42nd innings. He hit seven boundaries and a six over deep midwicket against Krishna in the day’s first over.
The English batsman showed particular aggression against India’s pace attack, coming down the track to hit Bumrah through the covers and lifting Siraj over the slips for boundaries. However, he faced challenges against Ravindra Jadeja’s spin bowling.
Brook survived two close calls during his innings. Rishabh Pant dropped a difficult chance at the stumps when Brook was on 46, while Bumrah had him caught on Saturday but was called for overstepping.
Pope’s early dismissal, adding just six runs to his overnight score of 100, brought Stokes to the crease. The England captain lasted nearly an hour before edging behind off Siraj.
Jamie Smith, who remained unbeaten on 29, joined Brook at the crease. Their partnership reached an unbroken 51 runs by lunch.
Jasprit Bumrah, who took three wickets on Saturday and could have had more, found no success on Sunday morning despite maintaining pressure on the batsmen.
The match was played with both teams wearing black armbands in memory of David ‘Syd’ Lawrence, England’s first British-born Black cricketer, who passed away at age 61.
The morning session demonstrated India’s improved bowling performance, with Krishna and Siraj providing crucial support to Bumrah, while England continued to build their first innings reply through Brook’s aggressive batting and solid partnerships.
