India vs South Africa Live Score, 1st Test Day 2: After Jasprit Bumrah’s heroics, batters look to continue momentum
India reached 37-1 at stumps, with Lokesh Rahul unbeaten on 13 and Washington Sundar on 6 when bad light ended play early. Marco Jansen bowled out Yashasvi Jaiswal for 12.
South Africa started well, reaching 57-0 in the first hour before Bumrah struck twice in quick succession. He bowled out Ryan Rickelton for 23 and dismissed Aiden Markram for 31. Kuldeep Yadav contributed by removing captain Temba Bavuma for 3. Wiaan Mulder and Tony de Zorzi then formed a partnership of 43 runs.
Yadav claimed Mulder’s wicket for 24, while Bumrah dismissed De Zorzi. Mohammad Siraj joined the attack, taking Kyle Verreynne’s wicket for 16 and bowling out Jansen for zero.
Bumrah completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing Simon Harmer for 5 and Keshav Maharaj for zero. He became the first Indian pace bowler to take five wickets on day one of a home test since Ishant Sharma’s achievement against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens in 2019.
This match marks the first test at Eden Gardens since the day-night test in 2019. South Africa has not won a test match in India for 15 years.
“The bounce is variable from one end. The new ball was coming nicely onto the bat, but when it got soft the bounce was low as well. We wanted to bowl full and at the stumps. It is not easy for the batters to score runs, but we are in a good position,” Siraj said.
