The MET Gala 2025 saw a big Indian presence with stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Kiara Advani, Diljit Dosanjh, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas shining on the red carpet. But not everyone was happy. Some people on social media trolled the Indian celebrities, calling their appearance the “Chandivalification of MET” – a phrase meant to mock and belittle their style.Actress Janhvi Kapoor didn’t stay quiet. She spoke out strongly against the trolls, pointing out the deeper issues behind their comments. In a post shared by DietSabya on Instagram, some netizens used the term “Chandivalification of MET” to suggest that Indian celebrities attending the MET Gala some how made the event less classy or less aspirational. The phrase is a jab, linking the grand fashion event to a Bollywood film called ‘Chandivali‘, implying the Indian presence was out of place.Janhvi responded with a sharp message, “Amusing how we’re being almost classist towards ourselves, clearly colonial trauma hasn’t left us (sic).” She highlighted how some Indians still judge their own culture harshly because of old colonial attitudes. Why Indian Designers and Artisans Deserve the SpotlightJanhvi reminded everyone that Indian artisans and designers have been creating beautiful work for decades, but often without getting the credit they deserve. She wrote, “For decades the work of our artisans has been exported from our country and put on global platforms without credit, for decades they have borrowed our fabrics, our embroidery, our textiles, our jewellery and presented it as a creation of which they are the rightful owners.”The MET Gala is a chance for India’s rich heritage to be celebrated openly and proudly on a global stage. Janhvi said, “I’m glad our people are finally getting the chance to represent so much of our work and heritage.”Jahnvi says we’re finally getting our dueInstead of feeling jealous or negative about Indian stars being in the spotlight, Janhvi urged people to feel proud. She wrote, “Shouldn’t we be happy we’re finally getting our due instead of salty about how seeing our own people on this platform is making it seem a little less aspirational? Might I say our garments were amongst the most spectacular.”
