New Delhi: Delhi cricket has been yearning for consistency with the bat in first-class cricket over the past few years. Sanat Sangwan is fast becoming the bankable batter who can provide a strong base with his solid technique as an opener. On Saturday, his 79 off 170 laid a perfect foundation for the rest of the Delhi batters to post another big score in their Ranji Trophy match against Himachal Pradesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. He may not have kicked on to emulate his unbeaten double hundred in Hyderabad in the previous game, but the batters around him stepped on the run rate to enable Delhi to post 306/4 in 86 overs on Day One. The assurance Sangwan provided from one end to blunt the new ball — on a pitch that had variable bounce and seam movement due to large patches of green — helped his struggling opening partner Arpit Rana score his maiden half-century, in his sixth first-class game.Arpit contributed 58 off 110 in the 102-run opening stand before Yash Dhull came out with an attacking approach to score a breezy 61 off 66. Ayush Doseja, who scored a double hundred on debut in Hyderabad, continued his good form as he walked off unbeaten on 51 off 88.

Poll

How crucial is Sanat Sangwan’s role as an opener for Delhi’s batting consistency?

While Dhull, Arpit and captain Ayush Badoni fell to loose shots behind the stumps, Sangwan hardly played a false shot in his stay, which spanned 66.2 overs.“There’s a temptation to free my arms once I am in. But I try not to get carried away. My coach late Tarak Sinha had drilled in it me that,” Sangwan said.
