Diwali may be over, but festive celebrations continue to light up states across the country.With several holidays lined up for the five-day festival of lights, many people are left wondering whether the stock markets will be open or closed today, October 22.

Are stock markets open on October 22?

NSE remains closed for trading today, on October 22, on the occasion of Balipratipada, according to the website of National Stock Exchange.Bombay stock exchange, too, remains closed today, in observance of Balipratipada, according to the exchange’s website.Trading at both the BSE and NSE will remain completely shut for the day, with all segments, including equities, derivatives, and SLB, closed. Regular market operations will resume on October 23.

Upcoming holidays

Apart from the usual holidays on Saturday and Sunday, the NSE and BSE will remain closed for two more days in 2025. Are commodity markets open today?

Trading on MCX will remain closed on October 22, 2025. Similarly, the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will also not operate today, on the ocassion of Balipratipada.Bali Pratipada, also known as Bali Padva, is celebrated on the fourth day of Diwali. The festival commemorates the symbolic return of the demon king Bali to Earth. In Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, it is also observed as the traditional New Year according to the Vikram Samvat calendar.

Muhurat trading 2025

During yesterday’s Muhurat trading session, held from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM, the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty closed slightly higher, marking a positive start to the Samvat 2082 amid strong global market cues.The NSE Nifty rose 25.45 points, or 0.10%, to settle at 25,868.60, with 24 stocks gaining, 25 declining, and one remaining unchanged. The BSE Sensex ended at 84,426.34, up 62.97 points, or 0.07%, after fluctuating between 84,286.40 and 84,665.44.The one-hour Muhurat session, conducted by BSE and NSE, symbolised the beginning of Samvat 2082. In comparison, the outgoing Samvat 2081, which concluded on Monday, had witnessed significant gains, with the Sensex rising 4,974.31 points (6.26%) and the Nifty climbing 1,637.8 points (6.76%).
